In 1966, the United States was in a bad way. Vietnam War was escalating. Racism was causing violence. “Hippies” were seen as a threat to the American way of life. Frank Sinatra’s “Strangers in the Night” was #3 on the music charts. Yes, things were bad.
Ronald Reagan–an actor turned politician–was eying a run for the California governorship. Reagan was a law and order conservative. He was vocal in his disgust for drugs, hippies, protests, and civil disobedience. But he loved America and all that it stood for. Reagan spoke these words:
Our problems are many, but our capacity for solving them is limitless.
These words strike me as oh-so-appropriate for the mess we are in today. I think the economy will turn around much quicker than the pundits are suggesting. Why? Because I believe in America’s blue and white collar workers. We work hard. We are innovative and creative. We are resourceful.
Moreover, the Internet has sped up change–which will allow adaptation to occur much more quickly.
Economic stability and growth–though perhaps not right around the corner–will return soon. I am optimistic about America. And I believe America will help the rest of the world sort through the economic crises.
