Two weeks ago, I posted Looking for a Lucrative Telecom Job? I described the opportunity as being part of a 5-person Zayo swat team to pursue broadband stimulus projects. Initially, the pay will be low–as the team gets up to speed and helps uncover (a) if there is a good opportunity for Zayo in this area and (b) if each individual is likely to be able to help us find and win projects. Success could/should lead to a longer term and perhaps permanent arrangement between Zayo and certain members of the team.
Did we get responses? Did we proceed forward with a team? Drum roll please…..
About 30 people responded, most of whom were highly qualified. Our lead on the project–Chris Morley–talked to most of the respondents. He was able to get the list down to 12 fairly quickly but narrowing it further was difficult. In the end, we decided to increase the size of the team to 7 people instead of 5. We also are supplementing the team with one or two Zayo employees. The reason we increased the size of the team is because we are cautiously optimistic that we will uncover a lot of opportunity.
Zayo brings three advantages to this effort. First, we have 20,000 route miles of network. Second, we have dry powder in the form of $128M of newly raised capital. Third, we have relationships with many health care and educational networks–as well as wireless companies–and these are the sectors in which the stimulus dollars will be pointed toward. I will provide updates along the way.
Swat team: good luck. I look forward to meeting you this week.
