We have used it extensively for salesforce automation, but this is not enough. I am pushing Zayo hard to fully embrace Salesforce.com as a comprehensive tool for service activation and, over time, much more.
I don’t have a full appreciation of Salesforce. Why, then, am I being so insistent?
- It is clear that Salesforce is one of the big winners in modern enterprise software. It is 100% reliant on the software-as-a-service business model. It is a subtle yet powerful bridge into cloud computing.
- The benefit of using Salesforce.com extend well beyond the capabilities of Salesforce.com the company. A whole ecosystem has risen around salesforce, enabling power users to benefit from development from others in the Salesforce.com ecosystem.
- Salesforce.com lends itself to Agile Development. I have a series of posts I want to write about the Agile mentality and how this should be applied to all aspects of business. So for those who know not what Agile Development means, I encourage you to do some Wiki research.
- I am frustrated that our organization has been slow to fully embrace Salesforce.com. By raising the profile of what I expect, it will drive our organization to move fully into this powerful world.
You want to get ahead at Zayo. Tip #1: Embrace Salesforce.com.
Dan,
as a former IT person at ZMS I have to say your are right on with this post. Salesforce allows power users to create systems that use to be limited to developers. They also provide APIs and a platform for developers to add to the Salesforce platform. Salesforce can and should be used for more than just CRM. The force.com platform allows you to even host your code on the Salesforce system (a powerful idea). Also the Saleforce Apex platform helps enforce Agile testing practices built in. This is also another area I cannot agree with you more about. I remember when you first came to MN (Onvoy) and were wandering around the office and I had a chance to talk to you about the Agile process and how much I believed in Agile development. Also I think SAAS saves incredible energy in software upgrades and hardware support. One way our ZMS team wanted to use Saleforce is a single source for customer data and have Saleforce feed other systems like billing, etc. Well good luck and keep us posted on the progress. I’m excited to read the Agile process posts.

Thanks Joe for the post. I want to see Zayo use Salesforce as a single source for customer data and it feed billing etc. And I want to accomplish this quickly. We have done a bunch in the past few months to get our arms around the data associated with all the acquired properties so it should be fairly straight-forward to port the data into Salesforce. I will definitely report on the progress. I will also write a series on Agile Methodology, maybe for next week.
